The Clyde Police Department says it is working with New York State Police and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an alleged assault involving a Wayne County varsity football team.
In a letter sent out by the Clyde-Savannah Central School District, Superintendent Michael Hayden said the incident involved several members of the team and has led to disciplinary action. Hayden said the district will not be releasing specific details because of the ongoing investigation and the confidentiality of student matters.
Clyde police say the incident happened at Clyde-Savannah High School on Oct. 31. According to the department, on Nov. 2, investigators became aware of a video recording that was allegedly taken of the incident.
According to Hayden, as a result of the incident, the varsity football team will have to forfeit its semifinal game on Friday against Marcus Whitman/Bloomfield. The team has so far been undefeated this season, but this forfeiture means their season is now over.
In the letter sent out by the school district, Hayden said in part:
"As a school district, we take matters of student behavior very seriously. Our primary focus remains the safety and well-being of all students. We are actively cooperating with law enforcement to address this matter appropriately.
"It is imperative to reinforce our district’s expectation that all students adhere to the established code of conduct. The values of responsibility, respect, and ethical behavior are fundamental to our community.
"While we understand the disappointment and frustration this situation will cause, we want to reiterate our commitment to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for all students and staff."
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Clyde Police Department at 315-923-3121 or 315-577-2266.
