The Kosoko Royal Family has officially named Prince Abdulrafiu Babajide Akanni Kosoko, widely known as Jide Kosoko, a Nollywood icon as the Oloja of Lagos-elect, marking a major moment in the city’s royal and cultural history.

The declaration was made on January 27, 2026, at the historic Kosoko Palace in Ereko, Lagos Island, where royal family members, elders, and cultural custodians gathered to witness the announcement.

Historic declaration at the Kosoko Palace

The palace courtyard came alive with traditional rites, prayers, and symbolic gestures reflecting centuries-old customs of the Lagos monarchy. The atmosphere was one of pride and unity as the Kosoko Royal Family formally affirmed its choice.

Prince Kosoko was presented to the gathering by the Olori Ebi General of the Kosoko Royal Family, Mutiat Ashabi Ali-Balogun, who raised his hands in public affirmation a traditional sign representing collective consent and endorsement by the family.

She was supported by the Deputy Olori Ebi General, Oyindamola Ayepola, who also serves as the Head of the Meshimo Ruling House, further reinforcing the legitimacy of the declaration.

Awaiting traditional installation

With the announcement, Prince Abdulrafiu Babajide Akanni Kosoko has officially assumed the status of Oloja of Lagos-elect. His emergence, however, remains subject to final traditional processes.

He is expected to undergo formal installation and capping by the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwanu Akiolu, in line with established palace protocols and long-standing Lagos traditions.

A blend of culture, history, and public life

Jide Kosoko’s emergence as Oloja-elect is being widely described as a significant intersection of royal heritage and modern public influence, given his decades-long impact on Nigeria’s film industry and cultural life.

The development reinforces the enduring relevance of Lagos’ traditional institutions while highlighting the continuity of the Kosoko royal lineage in the evolving story of the ancient city.
