The Lagos State Government has expressed deep regret over the collapse of a classroom building at Odokekere High School in Ikorodu, confirming that the structure had already been identified and approved for demolition before the incident occurred.

In a statement released on Friday, the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS) explained that the bungalow-style classroom block, which collapsed late Thursday, was among facilities earmarked for removal as part of plans to construct a modern and more spacious learning complex for the school.

According to the committee, the collapse came as a shock, even though the building had been previously classified as due for demolition to make way for a safer and more befitting classroom edifice capable of accommodating the school’s growing student population.

Importantly, the state government confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were recorded in the incident. All students and staff members were reported to be safe and in good condition at the time of the collapse.

Following the development, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the immediate relocation of affected students to nearby schools to ensure that academic activities continue without disruption.

The SCRPS also disclosed that its officials will conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the collapsed structure to determine the next steps. This assessment, the committee said, will fast-track arrangements for the immediate construction of an ultra-modern classroom block designed to meet current safety standards and educational needs.

The Lagos State Government reassured parents, students, and residents of Ikorodu of its commitment to providing safe, durable, and conducive learning environments across public schools in the state.
