Traffic Diversion Set as Lagos City Marathon Holds February 14

The Lagos State Government has unveiled a comprehensive traffic diversion plan ahead of the 2026 Lagos City Marathon, scheduled for Saturday, February 14, 2026. The arrangements aim to ensure smooth traffic flow and public safety during the marathon, which will feature both 42-kilometre and 10-kilometre races across designated routes.

Marathon Routes Announced

The 42-kilometre race will commence at Ahmadu Bello Way, near the MRS Gas Station, and finish along the Coastal Road. Meanwhile, the 10-kilometre race will start from Durosimi Etti Street in Lekki Phase 1 and proceed through Ozumba Mbadiwe Street, Bishop Oluwole Street, Akin Adesola Street, and Sanusi Fafunwa Street, where it will end.

Road Closures and Traffic Management

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation announced that all adjoining roads, junctions, and intersections along both race routes will be temporarily blocked from 12:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on race day. Access to these roads will be allowed intermittently as the races progress.

To maintain order and ensure safety, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other security agencies will be strategically deployed along the routes.

Commissioner’s Advisory to Motorists

Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, reassured residents that measures are in place to ease movement during the event. He advised motorists to plan trips ahead, consider alternative routes, and use public transport where possible to minimise inconvenience.

“Traffic Management Officials will be positioned along key areas to assist motorists in navigating their journeys safely,” Osiyemi said.

Public Appeal for Cooperation

In an official advisory, the Ministry urged road users to remain patient, highlighting that the temporary road restrictions are part of traffic management measures for the 11th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon Race 2026. The government emphasised that these measures are crucial for participant safety and the successful hosting of the event.

The Lagos City Marathon has grown into a major sporting event in Nigeria, attracting local and international runners. The 2026 edition promises both competitive races and a showcase of Lagos as a vibrant sporting city. Residents and commuters are encouraged to cooperate with officials and plan ahead to enjoy a safe and smooth experience.
