President Bola Tinubu has officially signed instruments of clemency and pardon, finalizing the constitutional process to grant relief to several convicted individuals across Nigeria.

According to a statement released on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the decision came after wide consultations with the Council of State and a careful assessment of public sentiment.

Before endorsing the final list, President Tinubu ordered a comprehensive review of previously approved names, exercising his constitutional prerogative of mercy under Section 175 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Following the review, individuals convicted of serious crimes such as kidnapping, drug trafficking, human trafficking, fraud, and illegal arms dealing were excluded from the list. In some cases, previously approved full pardons were adjusted to sentence reductions or commutations.
