Thiaw and Hakimi Sanctioned After Afcon Final Chaos

Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw received a five-match ban after chaotic scenes in the Afcon final.

The Confederation of African Football fined Thiaw $100,000 for unsporting conduct.

Caf said he brought the game into disrepute.

Total fines from the final reportedly approached £1m.

The Afcon final against Morocco took place on 18 January in Rabat.

Senegal won the match 1-0 after extra time.

Chaos erupted when Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty.

Thiaw instructed his players to leave the pitch in protest.

The decision followed an earlier disallowed Senegal goal.

The match was delayed by about 17 minutes.

Senegal captain Sadio Mane persuaded the team to return.

Morocco’s Brahim Diaz missed the penalty, saved by Edouard Mendy.

Referee Jean-Jacques Ndala immediately ended the match.

Pape Gueye scored the winning goal in extra time.

Senegal secured their second Afcon title in five years.

Two Senegal players received two-match bans for referee abuse.

The Senegal Football Federation was fined $615,000.

Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Ismael Saibari were also sanctioned.

Morocco’s appeal to overturn the result was rejected.

The bans apply only to Caf competitions.

World Cup preparations remain unaffected.
