The Pressure to Have Life Figured Out in Your 20s

Somehow, your 20s come with an unspoken deadline, to have answers you were never given.

By a certain age, you’re expected to know what you want to do with your life, be financially stable, emotionally mature, and confidently “on track.” And if you’re not, it starts to feel like you’re falling behind, even when you’re trying your best.

This pressure doesn’t always come from people speaking out loud. Sometimes, it’s subtle. It shows up when you scroll through social media and see peers announcing new jobs, engagements, relocations, and milestones. It shows up in casual questions like, “So what’s next for you?” It shows up in the quiet moments when you start measuring your life against timelines that were never designed for you.

What makes it harder is that confusion in your 20s is often mistaken for failure. But the truth is, this decade is less about having things figured out and more about figuring things out. You’re unlearning, relearning, trying, failing, adjusting, and becoming, often all at once.

There’s also the emotional weight of pretending. Pretending you’re okay with where you are. Pretending you’re not anxious about the future. Pretending you don’t feel left behind. Yet behind the scenes, many people are just as unsure, they’re simply better at packaging certainty.

Your 20s are not a race, even though they feel like one. Progress doesn’t always look loud or impressive. Sometimes, progress is surviving a confusing season. Sometimes, it’s choosing to keep going even when clarity hasn’t arrived yet. Sometimes, it’s learning patience with yourself.

It’s okay to want more while still appreciating where you are. It’s okay to feel capable and lost at the same time. And it’s okay if your life doesn’t look like what you imagined by now.

You are not late. You are not behind. You are becoming.

And becoming takes time.
