In a dramatic Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday, Senegal dethroned hosts Morocco with a 1-0 victory in extra time, courtesy of Pape Gueye’s decisive strike at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. The win marks Senegal’s second AFCON title in three editions, following their 2022 triumph over Egypt.

The final was overshadowed by tense and controversial moments, including a late penalty awarded to Morocco that could have handed the hosts the trophy. Real Madrid winger Brahim Diaz stepped up in the 24th minute of added time but saw his weak chip easily saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. The penalty followed a VAR review for a challenge on Diaz by Senegal defender El Hadji Malick Diouf, sparking furious protests from the Moroccan bench and players.

The decision ignited chaos in the stands, with some Senegal fans attempting to storm the pitch. Police and stewards quickly contained the situation, and the crowd erupted in relief and celebration when Mendy denied the penalty.

The breakthrough came in the fourth minute of extra time. Sadio Mane regained possession in midfield and set up Idrissa Gana Gueye, who found Pape Gueye. The Villarreal midfielder expertly held off Moroccan captain Achraf Hakimi before firing a superb shot into the top corner past goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. The goal sealed a historic win for Senegal, leaving Morocco devastated as their dream of lifting the trophy at home after 50 years slipped away.

Morocco had a late chance to equalize when Nayef Aguerd’s header struck the crossbar, but Senegal held firm. Cherif Ndiaye also missed a chance to extend the lead late in extra time, yet the Lions of Teranga maintained their composure to secure victory.

This triumph is Senegal’s first-ever goal in an AFCON final, having failed to score in their previous three appearances in the tournament’s deciding match. The team now looks ahead to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, with hopes of convincing Sadio Mane to return for another AFCON campaign, despite his declaration that this final would be his last.

The match, however, will not be remembered solely for the football. Authorities are expected to investigate the post-penalty chaos, focusing on fan behavior and organizational lapses by the hosts. Despite the off-field drama, the on-pitch action showcased Africa’s top defensive sides, with few clear-cut opportunities until the final moments.

For Morocco, the defeat is a bitter end to a tournament filled with hope. Fans braved a cold, wet night but left the stadium disheartened as Senegal lifted the trophy in a thrilling conclusion to AFCON 2025.
