WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – The regional round of playoffs in all nine classes of Kansas high school football saw hard-fought matchups end with survivors moving on in their respective classes and the teams they defeated going home.
Several battles Friday night featured teams with lofty expectations coming into the postseason.
East made a statement with its win over GWAL co-champion Wichita Northwest. Next up for East is a road battle at undefeated Washburn Rural in Topeka. The Junior Blues are undefeated and the top seed in the Class 6A West Bracket. In Week 1, Washburn Rural edged Wichita East, 26-25.
Also in the Wichita area, Derby made a statement of its own with a dominant win against Lawrence, 48-6. Next week, Derby will look to avenge its lone loss of the season as the Panthers hit the road at Manhattan.
OTHER WINNERS IN CLASS 6A: Gardner Edgerton, Olathe North, Blue Valley Northwest and Blue Valley.
Kapaun, Goddard Eisenhower, Maize South and Maize were all big winners, moving on in the West Bracket.
Kapaun fought off a fierce challenge from No. 9 seed Great Bend.
Maize South came from behind to upend Hutchinson, 21-20.
Maize, the 11th seed, continued its Cinderella run with a 35-26 upset win at Liberal.
Eisenhower made a statement with a 41-7 win against Hays.
OTHER WINNERS IN CLASS 5A: Topeka Seaman, Mill Valley, BV Southwest and Shawnee Heights
Wamego, the top seed in the West Bracket took care of business against Rose Hill, 42-14.
Andover Central overtook Abilene, 28-21.
McPherson made a statement with a strong defensive showing in a 26-3 win over Buhler.
Wellington came back to down Coffeyville, 27-21.
OTHER WINNERS IN CLASS 4A: Atchison, Tonganoxie, Basehor-Linwood, St. Thomas Aquinas
Top-seeded Cheney continues flying high with a 37-8 win over Holcomb.
Andale keeps its hopes for a fifth-straight state title alive with a 44-8 win at Scott City.
Collegiate downed Rock Creek, 47-28 to earn a rematch with Andale next week. On Oct. 6, the Indians controlled the Spartans, 28-7.
