Power Supply Drops Across South-East Over Gas Constraints — EEDC

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc (EEDC) has explained the recent drop in power supply across the South-East, citing gas constraints affecting electricity generation nationwide.

The company said low system frequency, caused by reduced gas supply to power plants, forced the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to ration available electricity.

As a result, TCN cut power allocation to EEDC, leading to fewer supply hours for customers across its network.

The Group Head, Corporate Communications at EEDC, Mr Emeka Eze, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday.

“The current power situation is a result of gas supply challenges affecting generation companies, which in turn reduced energy sent to distribution companies,” Eze said.

He explained that TCN introduced load shedding to stabilise the national grid, a move that directly affected EEDC’s daily electricity intake.

Impact Across EEDC Network

EEDC said the reduced allocation has affected customers served by its franchise operators, including MainPower, TransPower, FirstPower, NewEra and EastLand.

The company noted that the disruption cuts across residential, commercial and industrial customers within the South-East.

However, EEDC assured customers that stakeholders in the electricity value chain are working to resolve the gas-related challenges.

The firm said it expects gradual improvement once gas supply to generation companies stabilises.

Apology to Customers

EEDC apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused by the reduced power supply.

It also thanked consumers for their patience and understanding during the period of disruption.
