André Onana’s time at Manchester United is drawing to a close, with talks already under way over a summer departure.
The Cameroon international is still under contract at Old Trafford, but his chances of playing for the club again appear remote.
Reports indicate that members of Onana’s entourage recently travelled to Milan to hold discussions with several clubs. Inter, his former side and a Champions League contender, are believed to be among those spoken to.
United signed Onana from Inter in 2023 for £47.2 million, expecting him to reshape their build-up play from the back. That plan has since collapsed.
The goalkeeper has not featured for United since August, when the club suffered a shock Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town. By then, he had already lost his Premier League place to Altay Bayındır.
United’s decision to sign Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens further confirmed the club’s shift away from Onana. He was later sent on loan to Trabzonspor.
Lammens, signed for £18.2 million from Royal Antwerp, has since settled as United’s first choice. At 23, he is viewed as a long-term solution in goal.

Onana’s spell at United was mixed. He produced several outstanding saves and won three Premier League Save of the Month awards. However, costly errors repeatedly undermined his performances.
Onana’s Manchester United Record
- 102 appearances
- 150 goals conceded
- 24 clean sheets
- 1 trophy
A return to Italy could offer a fresh start. Onana enjoyed his best club season with Inter, helping them reach the 2023 Champions League final.
That campaign earned him a top-25 finish in the Ballon d’Or rankings and restored his reputation across Europe.
Inter are assessing their goalkeeping options, with Yann Sommer now 37 and nearing the end of his contract. Onana is familiar with the club and remains highly regarded in Serie A.
Other Italian sides could also show interest. Napoli have struggled with injuries to Alex Meret, while Juventus may consider changes in goal. Roma’s situation depends on the future of Mile Svilar.
In England, Aston Villa and Newcastle United are potential options if they seek experienced reinforcements. Saudi Arabia remains a possibility, although leading clubs there are currently settled in goal.
Major League Soccer is not thought to be attractive to the player at this stage of his career.
Even if Inter do not follow up with a formal bid, United are unlikely to reintegrate Onana. The club has already moved on.
Once signed to lead a new era at Old Trafford, Onana now looks set to rebuild his career elsewhere.
