Nigeria Proud of Super Eagles After AFCON Semi-Final Exit

The Federal Government has commended the Super Eagles for their resilience and spirited performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, despite their narrow semi-final defeat to Morocco.

Nigeria’s AFCON campaign came to an end on Wednesday night after the Super Eagles lost to Morocco’s Atlas Lions in a dramatic penalty shootout, denying the team a place in the final.

FG Hails Team’s Fighting Spirit

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, praised the players for displaying discipline, unity and determination throughout the tournament.

According to the minister, the Super Eagles embodied values that resonate deeply with the Nigerian spirit, adding that their performance remained a source of national pride regardless of the outcome.

Message of Encouragement From Government

Idris noted that the team’s effort and commitment had earned the respect and gratitude of Nigerians both at home and abroad.

“Even in defeat, you showed character, teamwork and resilience, and those qualities matter deeply to the nation you represent,” the statement read.

He added that football comes with both triumphs and setbacks, but the Super Eagles’ fighting spirit throughout the competition reflected courage, unity and perseverance.

“Nigeria remains proud of you and grateful for the joy and hope you gave us during this competition. Hold your heads high, learn from this experience, and return stronger,” the minister said.

How the Semi-Final Was Decided

The semi-final clash was settled on penalties after both sides failed to find a decisive goal in regulation time. Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou proved decisive, saving spot-kicks from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi.

Youssef En-Nesyri then converted the winning penalty to send Morocco through to the final, triggering celebrations at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

What Next for Morocco and Nigeria

Morocco will now face Senegal in Sunday’s AFCON final after the Lions of Teranga edged Egypt 1–0 in the other semi-final, courtesy of a Sadio Mane strike.

Despite their exit, Nigeria’s performance at the tournament has been widely praised, with many observers highlighting the team’s discipline, tactical growth and unity under pressure.
