Nigeria Overpower Mozambique to Seal AFCON Quarter-Final Spot

Nigeria booked their place in the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 with a commanding 4–0 victory over Mozambique, delivering a composed and authoritative performance in the Round of 16.

The Super Eagles set the tone from the opening minutes, pressing aggressively and dictating possession. Victor Osimhen thought he had given Nigeria an early lead in the second minute, but VAR ruled the effort out for offside.

Lookman opens scoring as pressure tells

Nigeria’s sustained pressure paid off in the 20th minute when Ademola Lookman broke the deadlock with a calm finish inside the box.

Five minutes later, Osimhen doubled the advantage, finding space in the area before finishing clinically to give Nigeria a deserved two-goal lead at the interval.

Osimhen brace ends contest after restart

Nigeria wasted no time after the break. Just two minutes into the second half, Lookman turned provider, setting up Osimhen to complete his brace and effectively end the contest.

Mozambique struggled to respond, with Nigeria maintaining control in midfield and limiting their opponents’ attacking options.

Defensive discipline keeps Mozambique quiet

Mozambique failed to gain a foothold as Nigeria’s defence remained compact and organised throughout the encounter.

Calvin Bassey marshalled the back line superbly, ensuring winger Geny Catamo and other attacking threats were kept at bay.

Adams adds gloss as Super Eagles march on

Nigeria added further gloss to the scoreline in the 70th minute when Akor Adams struck the fourth goal, capping a dominant team display.

The victory extended Nigeria’s winning run at the tournament and reinforced their status as one of the standout sides.

Quarter-final opponents to be confirmed

Mozambique’s fairytale AFCON journey came to an end, while Nigeria advanced with growing confidence.

The Super Eagles will discover their quarter-final opponents on Tuesday, with Algeria and DR Congo set to battle for a place in the last eight.
