Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, has issued a striking warning about the future of the platform, saying the rise of AI-generated content has fundamentally changed the way users experience social media. In a year-end essay, Mosseri argued that the polished, curated aesthetic that once defined Instagram is being replaced by raw, unfiltered, and personal posts the new marker of authenticity.
“The only proof something is real now is the raw, unpolished content,” Mosseri wrote, highlighting a seismic shift in how people interact on the platform.
Young Users Leading the Change
Mosseri noted that most Instagram users under 25 are already abandoning the meticulously crafted grids of the past. Instead, they favor direct messages, candid snapshots, and “unflattering” personal photos, signaling a move away from perfection toward authenticity.
Fighting Fake Content With Technology
To combat misinformation and AI-generated fakes, Mosseri suggested camera makers digitally sign photos at the point of capture. This cryptographic verification would make it easier to confirm the authenticity of media before it spreads online.
The Road Ahead for Instagram
Instagram is preparing for a major evolution. Mosseri said the platform plans to:
- Label AI-generated content to give users more transparency.
- Provide richer account context so people can understand who is behind posts.
- Develop tools for creators to compete with AI-generated media.
