Havertz Late Strike Sends Arsenal Past Chelsea Into Carabao Cup Final

Kai Havertz struck deep into stoppage time as Arsenal defeated Chelsea 1–0 at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

The victory sealed a 4–2 aggregate win and sent Mikel Arteta’s side into the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

In a tense and closely fought semi-final second leg, Arsenal prioritised control and defensive discipline over attacking risk.

Chelsea dominated possession for long periods but struggled to convert pressure into clear scoring opportunities throughout the contest.

The decisive moment arrived in the 97th minute when Havertz broke clear from midfield following a precise Declan Rice delivery.

The substitute calmly rounded goalkeeper Robert Sanchez before finishing into an empty net against his former club.

The goal sparked wild celebrations inside the Emirates and confirmed Arsenal’s first cup final appearance since 2020.

It also ended a run of four consecutive semi-final defeats for Arteta since taking charge of the North London club.

Defensive discipline defines Arsenal performance

Arsenal were content to protect their first-leg advantage, relying on a well-organised back line and midfield screen.

Chelsea registered 14 shots compared to Arsenal’s five but rarely troubled goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga decisively.

Enzo Fernandez came closest for the visitors in the first half, forcing Kepa into a sharp save from distance.

At the other end, Piero Hincapie and Gabriel Magalhaes both tested Sanchez from set-piece situations.

Declan Rice delivered another commanding performance, dictating tempo and providing the assist for the winning goal.

Arsenal’s clean sheet was their 20th in all competitions this season, the most across Europe’s major leagues.

Chelsea frustration as pressure fails to tell

Chelsea needed a goal to force extra time but lacked urgency and cutting edge in the final third.

Despite sustained spells of possession, their build-up play failed to break through Arsenal’s compact defensive structure.

Head coach Liam Rosenior, still early in his tenure, acknowledged disappointment while pointing to encouraging signs.

He stressed the need for a strong response ahead of Chelsea’s upcoming league fixture away at Wolves.

Arteta praises team effort and atmosphere

Arteta described Havertz’s winner as a “magical” moment and praised the collective effort over both legs.

He highlighted the role of the home supporters, crediting their energy for driving the team through difficult moments.

Arsenal were without Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard due to injury but showed depth and resilience.

Wembley awaits Arsenal

Arsenal will face either Manchester City or Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, March 22.

Kick-off at Wembley Stadium is scheduled for 4:30pm as Arsenal continue their pursuit of silverware this season.
