EFCC Calls for Stronger Collaboration with Media and CSOs in Anti-Corruption Drive

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has called for stronger collaboration among the media, civil society organizations (CSOs), and the commission in the ongoing fight against corruption and financial crimes in Nigeria.

Speaking at a capacity-building workshop for journalists and CSOs in Lagos, the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, highlighted the crucial role of the media and civil society as watchdogs that help promote transparency and accountability. He was represented at the event by the acting Director of the Commission, Adebayo Adeniyi.

According to Olukoyede, the media’s ability to inform, educate, and shape public opinion remains a vital tool in combating corruption, fraud, and other economic crimes. He noted that around the world, collaboration between anti-corruption agencies, the press, and civil groups has proven essential in strengthening governance and promoting integrity.

He commended the media and CSOs for their consistent support through investigative reporting, advocacy, and public engagement, which have kept anti-corruption awareness alive.

Olukoyede explained that in 2022, the EFCC introduced a Specialised Workshop Series on Economic and Financial Crimes Reporting to enhance journalists’ capacity in investigative reporting. The program, he added, has since been expanded to include CSOs to ensure broader civic participation and inclusiveness in anti-corruption efforts.

Describing Lagos as Nigeria’s commercial hub and a hotspot for financial crimes such as foreign exchange scams, business email compromise, and property fraud, he emphasized the importance of public enlightenment to prevent citizens from falling victim to fraudulent schemes.

He urged all stakeholders to intensify public education and continue championing integrity, transparency, and accountability, stressing that the fight against corruption should not be left to the EFCC alone but seen as a collective national responsibility.

“The EFCC remains committed to building stronger and more effective partnerships with all stakeholders in the anti-corruption drive. Together, we can create a Nigeria where accountability and justice are upheld as national values,” Olukoyede affirmed.
