The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has stated that the defection of the governors of Enugu and Bayelsa States to the All Progressives Congress (APC) does not guarantee victory for the ruling party in the 2027 elections.
Speaking in Abuja, the CUPP General Secretary, Chief Peter Ameh, criticized the ongoing wave of defections from opposition parties to the APC, describing it as a sign that many politicians have failed to learn from Nigeria’s political history.
He explained that those joining the ruling party, including the two governors, must remember that Nigerians still hold the ultimate power to decide who governs them in 2027.
According to Ameh, while he is not surprised by the defections, he is disappointed that many political elites still see joining the ruling party as the only way to survive politically, instead of focusing on genuine service to the people.
He stressed that no defection can save any leader who has lost touch with citizens. Ameh noted that the 2023 general elections marked a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic journey, as voters across the country stood firm against intimidation and political manipulation.
He pointed to the Southern Kaduna Constituency, where an Okada rider defeated well-known politicians to win a seat in the House of Representatives, as proof that Nigerians now vote based on conscience rather than party loyalty.
Ameh concluded that the growing public dissatisfaction with these defections shows that the 2027 elections will be highly competitive and that the people’s will could reshape the nation’s political future.
