Chelsea have stepped up plans to overhaul their midfield ahead of the 2026 season, with Kobbie Mainoo, Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson emerging as key summer targets.
According to The Telegraph, the Blues want to strengthen central midfield to reduce the workload on Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, who remain first-choice options under manager Enzo Maresca.
Midfield Depth Tops Chelseaโs Agenda
Chelsea have already invested heavily in midfield, spending more than ยฃ100m on Fernandez and Caicedo from Benfica and Brighton respectively.
Maresca can also call on Andrey Santos and Dario Essugo, while club captain Reece James has filled in centrally on several occasions this season.
However, Fernandez and Caicedo remain Marescaโs preferred pairing, prompting concerns about over-reliance on the duo across competitions.
Injuries Force Rethink in Central Areas
Essugo has made just three appearances since joining from Sporting due to injury setbacks.
James has also struggled with fitness in recent years, while Romeo Lavia has endured multiple spells on the sidelines.
As a result, Chelsea are keen to add quality cover and competition to strengthen squad balance and maintain intensity.
January Move Unlikely as Focus Shifts to Summer
Chelsea are not expected to enter the January transfer market unless injuries worsen significantly.
Instead, club executives are targeting the summer window for a major midfield recruitment drive.
The approach reflects a preference for long-term planning rather than reactive mid-season spending.
Mainoo Emerges From United Uncertainty
Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has emerged as a potential Chelsea target.
The 20-year-old has yet to start a Premier League match under Ruben Amorim this season, making all 11 appearances from the bench.
Mainoo, who explored an exit last summer, is believed to be seeking regular game time to boost his England prospects.
A loan move to Napoli has been discussed as he pushes for inclusion in Thomas Tuchelโs national team plans.
Wharton, Anderson Attract Strong Interest
Adam Wharton is also on Chelseaโs radar after impressing since joining Crystal Palace from Blackburn Rovers last January.
The 21-year-old has developed into one of the Premier Leagueโs most progressive passers, attracting growing interest ahead of the next window.
Elliot Anderson, currently at Nottingham Forest, is another midfielder under consideration.
However, both Wharton and Anderson are expected to command fees exceeding ยฃ100m, complicating potential negotiations.
Chelsea Maintain Momentum On the Pitch
Chelsea secured progression in the EFL Cup on Tuesday with a win over League One leaders Cardiff City in Wales.
The Blues return to Premier League action on Saturday with a lunchtime clash against Newcastle United at St Jamesโ Park.
