Bukunmi Oluwasina: From Script to Screen, How Passion and Purpose Shaped a Nollywood Powerhouse

Bukunmi Oluwasina is one of Nollywood’s most compelling creative forces an actress, singer, producer, and screenwriter whose journey reflects the power of purpose-driven storytelling. With a career built on authenticity rather than hype, she continues to carve a distinctive path in Nigeria’s film industry and beyond.

Born on May 7, 1990, in Ekiti State, Nigeria, Bukunmi is married to Mr. Ebun and has a daughter, Avia. But long before the awards, international recognition, and creative milestones, her story began in a home grounded in values, balance, and encouragement.

A Childhood Rooted in Values

Raised in a close-knit family of seven, Bukunmi credits her upbringing particularly her father’s guidance for shaping her worldview. She once described her father’s parenting style as one that allowed freedom but never excess, a balance that helped her develop discipline, independence, and clarity of purpose early in life.

In a recent interview with BellaNaija, Bukunmi reflected on how growing up with supportive parents influenced her understanding of family, relationships, and responsibility.

“Growing up with the best dad and a sweet mum made me know what to look forward to in a man and also how important ‘family’ is,” she said.

Those early lessons would later inform not only her personal life, but also the emotional depth and authenticity evident in her work.

Discovering Her Calling

Bukunmi’s love for storytelling emerged early. She wrote her first script while in Primary 3, a moment that marked the beginning of what would become a lifelong pursuit. Encouraged by her father, she was introduced to filmmaker Mrs. Fadekemi Ologbesesan, an experience that further sharpened her interest in filmmaking.

She went on to study Theatre Arts at Obafemi Awolowo University, where she refined her craft and prepared for a professional career in the creative arts. For Bukunmi, acting and singing are not just professions they are callings.

From Breakout Role to Industry Recognition

Her breakthrough came in 2015 with Ayomi, her debut film, which earned her the Best Actress award at the Best of Nollywood Awards and a nomination at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA). The project announced her arrival as a talent to watch and set the tone for a career defined by versatility and depth.

Nearly a decade later, Bukunmi continues to evolve. Her 2024 film White and Black represents one of her most ambitious projects to date. In the film, she not only starred but also wrote the script a testament to her commitment to owning her stories from conception to execution.

The film has received international recognition, earning nominations at festivals in Canada, the United States, and India. It has been screened at major platforms including the Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival (TINFF), BIFA, and the New York International Film Awards. With a 7.7 rating on IMDb, White and Black has been praised for its storytelling and Bukunmi’s nuanced performance.

Beyond Acting: Music and Creative Expression

When she is not on screen or behind the script, Bukunmi expresses herself through music. Songs like Happy Girl and Everyday Crush reveal another layer of her creativity, reinforcing her reputation as a multi-dimensional artist unafraid to explore different forms of expression.

Success on Her Own Terms

Despite her growing acclaim, Bukunmi defines success differently. For her, fulfillment matters more than visibility.

“Being in the right place is more important than being everywhere,” she says.

Her philosophy is simple but powerful: stay focused, avoid unnecessary comparison, and trust timing.

“Focus on your lane, and don’t compete with time.”

A Story Still Being Written

Bukunmi Oluwasina’s journey is a reminder that longevity in the creative industry is built on purpose, consistency, and staying true to oneself. As she continues to tell stories that resonate locally and globally, she stands as a symbol of what is possible when talent meets intention.
