Airtel Africa Partners SpaceX to Launch Starlink Mobile Service by 2026

Airtel Africa has partnered with SpaceX to roll out Starlink’s direct-to-cell satellite service across its 14 African markets by 2026.

The company announced the agreement on Tuesday, describing it as a major step towards expanding mobile connectivity in underserved regions.

Under the partnership, Airtel Africa customers with compatible smartphones will access mobile network coverage in areas without terrestrial infrastructure. The service will initially support text messaging and data for select applications.

Bringing Connectivity Beyond Terrestrial Networks

In a statement, Airtel Africa said the collaboration includes support for Starlink’s first broadband direct-to-cell system. The next-generation satellites promise up to 20 times improved data speed.

“The rollout will proceed in line with country-specific regulatory approvals,” the statement said.

Airtel Africa added that it is the first mobile network operator on the continent to offer Starlink’s direct-to-cell service. The system will rely on about 650 low-Earth orbit satellites to deliver coverage in remote locations.

Airtel Africa Sets New Connectivity Standard

Sunil Taldar, managing director and chief executive officer of Airtel Africa, said the partnership aligns with the company’s long-term connectivity goals.

“Airtel Africa remains committed to delivering a great experience by expanding reliable and contiguous mobile connectivity,” Taldar said.

“Starlink’s direct-to-cell technology complements our terrestrial infrastructure and reaches areas where deployment is difficult.”

He described the collaboration as a new benchmark for service availability across Airtel Africa’s markets.

Starlink Sees Life-Changing Impact

Stephanie Bednarek, Starlink’s vice-president for sales, said the partnership would unlock access to essential digital services.

“We are thrilled that Starlink direct to cell can power this life-changing service,” she said.

“This agreement will also deliver next-generation broadband technology, enabling faster access to critical services.”

According to Airtel Africa, the deal reinforces its commitment to bridging Africa’s digital divide. The company said it would continue exploring further collaboration with Starlink to advance digital inclusion.
