Victor Osimhen has made it clear that personal milestones mean little to him compared to delivering silverware for Nigeria, as the Super Eagles continue their impressive run at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The prolific striker opened the scoring in Nigeria’s commanding 2–0 victory over Algeria in Marrakesh on Saturday, netting his 35th international goal before turning provider for Akor Adams to seal the win. The result booked Nigeria a place in the semi-finals, where they will face hosts Morocco.

Despite now being just two goals away from equalling the legendary Rashidi Yekini’s all-time Super Eagles record of 37 goals, Osimhen insists individual achievements are not his priority.

“I’ve said it many times—it doesn’t matter to me if I equal or surpass the record,” Osimhen said after the match. “Rashidi Yekini is the greatest striker Nigeria has ever produced. For me, it’s about giving my best to the team and trying to win something for my country.”

The 27-year-old forward, who has scored nine goals in his last eight international appearances and four in his last four AFCON games, continues to lead Nigeria’s attack with authority and maturity. His form has been central to the Super Eagles’ flawless tournament so far, with five wins from five matches and an impressive 14 goals scored.

Osimhen stressed that the team’s collective ambition outweighs individual accolades. “It’s not about goals or assists,” he said. “It’s about winning with this squad. I have confidence in myself, but even more confidence in my teammates. We’re on the right path, but nothing will be easy.”

Nigeria’s semi-final clash with Morocco will take place next Wednesday in Rabat a city that holds painful memories for the Super Eagles after their World Cup qualification hopes ended there in a penalty shootout defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo last November. This time, however, Nigeria arrive with momentum, belief, and a clear sense of purpose.

Head coach Eric Chelle praised his team’s identity and growth, noting that Nigeria could have put the game beyond Algeria earlier. “We had chances in the first half and were more clinical after the break,” he said. “The team has an identity now, with and without the ball. The players are enjoying themselves, and we want to keep this positive momentum.”

As Nigeria edge closer to continental glory, Osimhen’s message remains consistent: history can wait. For the Super Eagles’ talisman, lifting the AFCON trophy for Nigeria is the ultimate goal and everything else is secondary.
