New Year: Put People First or Risk Nigeria’s Future — Jonathan Warns Leaders

Former President Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has urged Nigerian leaders to prioritise citizens’ welfare in governance, warning that failure to adopt people-centred leadership could endanger the nation’s future.

Jonathan gave the warning in his New Year message to Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, as the country steps into 2026 amid economic pressure and persistent security challenges.

The message was issued on Wednesday through his Media Assistant, Wealth Dickson Ominabo.

Jonathan Calls for People-Centred Leadership

Reflecting on the significance of the new year, Jonathan said the transition into 2026 should inspire hope, reflection, and renewed commitment to national service.

“As we enter 2026, we give thanks to God for the gift of life and the privilege of a new beginning,” he said.
“The turning of the year invites hope and reflection, and it is with both that we welcome this moment.”

He stressed that leadership at all levels must place people at the centre of policy decisions.

Economic Hardship, Insecurity Tested Nigerians

Jonathan acknowledged that the past year had been difficult for many Nigerians, citing economic strain and insecurity as major challenges.

He said these pressures had tested the resilience of citizens and brought hardship and loss to several families across the country.

“The period behind us has not been without its trials. We have confronted economic pressures and persistent insecurity,” he said.

According to him, the experiences underscore the responsibility Nigerians owe one another and the need for compassionate governance.

Resilience Remains Nigeria’s Strength

Despite the challenges, Jonathan praised Nigerians for their courage and unity in the face of adversity.

He described the resilience of citizens as one of Nigeria’s greatest strengths, noting that shared values and diversity have helped sustain hope.

“Across our communities, we continue to see courage, solidarity, and a quiet determination to persevere,” he said.

“Our collective belief in a better tomorrow has sustained us through uncertainty.”

Leadership Must Be Anchored in Integrity

Looking ahead, Jonathan called on leaders and citizens to recommit to national ideals that promote unity and progress.

He stressed that patriotism must go hand in hand with duty, humility, integrity, and service to the people.

“Leadership at all levels must be anchored in service and guided by integrity and a sincere commitment to the welfare of the people,” he said.

Shared Responsibility Key to National Progress

Jonathan emphasised that Nigeria’s stability and development depend on collective effort and mutual respect.

He said only through shared responsibility and dedication to the national interest can the country achieve inclusive growth.

“It is through shared responsibility, mutual respect, and steadfast dedication to the national interest that Nigeria can continue on the path toward stability,” he stated.

Prayer for Unity and Prosperity

The former President concluded by wishing Nigerians a peaceful and fulfilling year.

He prayed for steady progress toward unity, justice, and shared prosperity in 2026, urging leaders to choose service over self-interest as the nation moves forward.
