Firm Plans 250 EV Charging Points Across Lagos

LUG West Africa has announced plans to install more than 250 electric vehicle charging points across Lagos State. The company also plans to set up a local assembly plant for street lighting infrastructure by 2026.

The smart city development firm disclosed this at its 2025 end-of-year event held in Lagos. The gathering drew government officials, industry stakeholders, and private sector leaders.

Among those present were the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, and the Ogun State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat.

Solar Street Lights to Power Charging Network

The company said the project aims to support Nigeriaโ€™s rising electric vehicle adoption. It also seeks to reduce dependence on imported street lighting components.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman and Managing Director of LUG West Africa, Imran Hamzat, said the firm is working closely with international partners. The collaboration focuses on integrating solar-powered street lighting systems with EV charging infrastructure.

Hamzat said Nigeria recorded an estimated 400 per cent increase in electric vehicles between 2020 and 2025.

Rising EV Numbers Drive Infrastructure Demand

He noted that projections suggest electric vehicles could account for about 10 per cent of vehicles on Nigerian roads by 2030. Nigeria currently has more than 11 million vehicles nationwide.

According to him, an eight per cent adoption rate would translate to roughly 850,000 electric vehicles. This growth, he said, would create strong demand for public charging facilities.

Hamzat explained that many EV owners may not have access to home charging options. Public and roadside charging points, he said, remain essential to ensure reliable mobility.

Existing Infrastructure Supports Rollout

Hamzat disclosed that LUG West Africa has already installed over 50,000 solar-powered street lights across Lagos State. He described this network as a strong foundation for integrating EV charging solutions.

He said each electric vehicle requires about 240 volts for one hour of charging. That level of power can deliver an estimated 40 miles of driving range.

According to him, seven monocrystalline solar panels, each producing 36 volts, can generate sufficient energy. The system can charge one electric vehicle while covering about 200 metres of roadway.

Project Designed for Nationwide Scale

Based on this model, Hamzat said Lagos can conveniently support an average of 250 EV charging stations. He added that the number would be sufficient to support projected electric vehicle growth nationwide.

The company already has a working prototype and expects to produce a test sample by 2026.

Hamzat said the initiative is designed to scale beyond Lagos. He confirmed that LUG West Africa plans to roll out the solution across Nigeria with its global partners.

Assembly Plant and Staff Recognition

He also confirmed that the company is constructing an assembly plant in Lagos. The facility will assemble street lighting systems and manufacture components for EV charging stations.

The end-of-year event also recognised staff members for dedication and strong performance. The celebration ended with cash rewards and gifts ranging from โ‚ฆ100,000 to โ‚ฆ600,000.

Ten solar-powered fans were distributed, while one guest won the โ‚ฆ600,000 grand prize.
